Learning paths

Structured sequences for the three challenges precision manufacturers most often work through.

Beginner

Getting your shop floor off paper

4 steps · 2–4 weeks to complete · Quality + Execution

01

Map your current paper flows — Identify every clipboard, logbook, and report that leaves the floor, and what it is actually used for.

02

Structure work orders and job cards — Define what a job record needs to carry: operations, materials, quantities, and quality steps.

03

Configure operator stations — Set up touch-first interfaces at each cell so operators report progress without leaving the machine.

04

Go live with real-time capture — Run your first week with live labor and quality data feeding your schedule and costing automatically.

Intermediate

Building a quality system that passes audits

4 steps · 4–6 weeks to complete · Quality

01

Understand ISO 9001 clause structure — Break down the 10 clauses into what each one actually requires your operation to demonstrate.

02

Set up NCR and CAPA workflows — Define how nonconformances are raised, categorised, routed, and closed with verified corrective action.

03

Link supplier quality records — Connect inbound inspection, GRN, and supplier NCRs so the audit trail runs from receipt to dispatch.

04

Prepare documentation for auditors — Know exactly which records an auditor will ask for, and ensure they are complete, dated, and accessible.

Mastering real-time job costing

3 steps · 2–3 weeks to complete · Costing

01

Structure your BOM and routings — Define every material, operation, and time standard so the system can price a job before it starts.

02

Capture costs at the source — Labor, machine time, and scrap captured at the floor feed live job cost — no month-end reconstruction.

03

Read variance and sharpen your quotes — Compare estimated vs. actual for every closed job and use the difference to improve your next quote.

Manufacturing glossary

Key terms used on the Novatro platform and across precision manufacturing — defined the way shop floors use them, not the way textbooks do.

5M² Method

Novatro’s readiness gate: Machine, Man, Material, Method, and Measurement must each be confirmed before a job enters the schedule.

Planning

BOM — Bill of Materials

A structured list of every material, component, and sub-assembly required to produce one unit of a finished product, with quantities and units of measure.

Costing

CAPA

Corrective Action, Preventive Action. A formal process that identifies the root cause of a nonconformance and implements actions to prevent recurrence.

Quality

Cycle time

The elapsed time from the start of one unit to the start of the next on a given operation or machine. Distinct from lead time, which includes queue.

Execution

First Pass Yield

The proportion of units that complete a process step without requiring rework or rejection. A direct measure of process capability.

Quality

GRN — Goods Receipt Note

The document that confirms materials received from a supplier match the purchase order in quantity, specification, and condition.

Procurement

Job costing

The assignment of all direct and indirect costs to a specific production job, allowing margin to be calculated at the job level rather than averaged across periods.

Costing

Kanban

A pull-based inventory replenishment signal. When a bin is emptied or a stock level falls below a trigger, a replenishment order is placed automatically.

Planning

Lead time

Total elapsed time from customer order to delivery. Includes processing time, queue time, inspection, and transit. Usually much longer than cycle time alone.

Planning

MES — Manufacturing Execution System

Software that manages and monitors production on the shop floor in real time, bridging the gap between planning systems and physical operations.

Execution

NCR — Non-Conformance Report

A formal record that documents a product, material, or process that has failed to meet a specified requirement, with disposition and corrective action linked.

Quality

OEE — Overall Equipment Effectiveness

A composite metric: OEE = Availability × Performance × Quality. World-class is considered ≥85%. Most precision shops start between 60–70%.

Execution

Poka-yoke

An error-proofing mechanism that prevents a mistake from occurring or makes a defect immediately obvious if it does occur. Physical or digital.

Quality

Routing

The sequence of operations required to manufacture a part, defining which machine or cell performs each step, the standard time, and quality check points.

Execution

SOP — Standard Operating Procedure

A documented procedure defining how a specific operation or task is performed, ensuring consistency regardless of which operator runs the process.

Execution

Takt time

Available production time divided by customer demand. The pace at which the line must produce to meet demand without over- or under-producing.

Planning

Variance analysis

Comparison of estimated job cost (from BOM and routing) to actual job cost (from captured labor, material, and machine time). Drives quote improvement.

Costing

WIP — Work in Progress

Materials and parts that have entered the production process but have not yet been completed and passed final inspection.
